Summary of Tale
The squire's tale is split into two parts and is about the great king Cambuskan of Mongolia and his family of the past. On a day of a great feast, celebrating the king's 20th year of rule, a knight arrives unexpectedly. The knight gives a detailed story. The knight gives the king a brass horse with the ability to transport him anywhere on the globe in less than 24 hours, a mirror that can show who is your friend or enemy, and a magical sword that can cut through any armor and heal any wound. The king has a daughter named Canace, who is the most beautiful in the land. The knight gives the gift of a magical gold ring to her. The ring has the ability to make her understand and speak every language, human or animal.
The reader then skips to part two of the story. The reader jumps to Canace going for a walk on a brisk morning. She hears birds singing and other animals and with the magical ring, can understand their words. Then with the ring, she hears a cry of pain. The sound leads her to a falcon in distress. The falcon explains that she is heartbroken after her mate has left her for another falcon. Canace feels for the falcon and takes her back to the castle to take care of her. The squire attempts to tell a third part of the story about the rest of the family, but The Franklin stops him and congratulates the squire on his great story.
